Tennis players to watch at state tournament
The girls high school state tennis tournaments begin Friday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Here are players to watch in each class:
6A
Jenna Noel, Westmoore: After finishing third at the state tournament last year, Noel is back and looking to take down No. 1 girls player Andie Williams of Jenks in a rematch of the regional tournament finals.
Lora Boggs, Edmond North: The senior is coming off a No. 2 singles regional championship last week when she defeated rival Courtney Wilkinson of Edmond Santa Fe. Boggs played doubles last year, losing in the state finals.
Riley Fischer and Angel Bui, Mustang: The duo from Mustang claimed the No. 2 Doubles regional championship last week when they took down Edmond North’s Taylor Couch and Katelyn Shaffer.
5A
Brooke Thompson, Heritage Hall: Only a freshman, Thompson has been dominant for most of the year as she’s claimed a No. 1 singles victory at the 5A East/West Showdown, dominated a tournament at Tulsa Union and won the regional championship.
Jessica Le, Bishop McGuinness: Le is coming off a regional championship last week when she defeated Duncan’s Vanessa Cassidy. Le is looking for a rematch with Heritage Hall’s Thompson, who up-ended her in the 5A East/West showdown.
Ashton Bryant and Abby Davis, Carl Albert: The No. 1 Doubles pair fell to Tulsa Kelley’s Laney Lehman and Aubrey Bailey, but Carl Albert tied Bishop Kelley for a regional championship. The duo hopes to win it outright this time around at state.
4A
Sarah Evans and Julia Pierce, Mount St. Mary: The senior duo has won several tournaments this year, including the Canadian Valley Conference tournament, Pauls Valley Tournament and they took home a regional championship.
Mary Streller, Oklahoma Christian School: Streller took down Harding Charter Prep’s Carolyn Eakers-Jarrett for a regional title last week at Earlywine Tennis Center.
Taryn Clark, Christian Heritage Academy: Clark finished second in No. 2 singles at the regional tournament last week.
