OSU pitcher Carson Teel ranks Cowboys’ rally objects
The Oklahoma State baseball team consistently has some trinket the players rally around, the latest being a cowboy hat. OSU left-hander Carson Teel ranks the team’s odd items from recent seasons:
1. Utropolis: A plastic dinosaur that “helped” the Cowboys make the 2016 College World Series.
Teel’s take: “You gotta go with Utrop to start it out. We found him at the Big 12 tournament our Omaha-run year, and then we just go dominate with him. He was alongside us for the whole thing.”
2. Cowboy hat: A former decoration players wear after hitting home runs.
Teel’s take: “Everybody wants a piece of the hat. Everybody wants to wear the hat, get a picture with the hat.”
3. Rally Bass: A giant stuffed fish that’s been around longer than Josh Holliday has been OSU’s coach.
Teel’s take: “That’s seen a lot of great things. … We’ve beat people up with it before, so it’s durable.”
4. Iglesias: A toilet-seated gnome the pitchers took care of in the 2016 season.
Teel’s take: “He had a really, really good run with us. I think we had a bunch of shutouts with him that Omaha year. He was a man.”
5. Hello Kitty backpack: Worn by the pitcher who most recently allowed a home run during the 2015 season.
Teel’s take: “You didn’t want to be the guy to have it. You’d have to fill it up with snacks, so at least the bullpen got snacks.”
6. Nemo: An inflatable version of the lovable Disney-Pixar fish that has since popped.
Teel’s take: “Nemo hung out in the locker room, got to fly around. Got used as a punching bag.”
7. Harambe: A King Kong action figure awarded to each game’s best pitcher early in the 2017 season. Named for the martyrto-meme Cincinnati Zoo gorilla.
Teel’s take: “Harambe was an interesting guy. We played well sometimes if he was hanging on the fence right, but if he wasn’t, we got absolutely drilled. There was not a lot of good luck behind that guy.”
