‘I Can Only Imagine’ to get home release in June
The Oklahoma-made movie “I Can Only Imagine,” based on the story behind the smash song of the same name, will be available for home viewing in June.
The hit faith-based film will debut on Digital beginning June 5, and the Blu-ray and DVD release is set for June 12. The movie is available for pre-order at icanonly imagine.com/buy.
As previously reported, the movie hit a high note at the domestic box office during its March opening weekend, bringing in $17.1 million. Distributed by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, the fact-based film more than doubled its modest $7 million budget in its initial weekend alone, when it ranked third at the domestic box office behind the opening of the reboot of “Tomb Raider,” starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander, in the No. 2 slot with $23.5 million from 3,854 sites, and DisneyMarvel’s pop-culture juggernaut “Black Panther,” which scored a rare fifth consecutive weekend at No. 1 with $27 million from 3,834 locations.
The film has made $81.9 million in theaters, according to Box OfficeMojo.com, and it is still playing in many cinemas. To find a theater playing the film, go to tickets.icanonlyimagine.com.
“I Can Only Imagine” tells the story behind the multiplatinum song of the same name, which found an audience with both pop and Christian fans everywhere, selling millions of copies worldwide and reaching the top of the Billboard Top 200 singles chart.
Based on the true story of lead singer Bart Millard and the popular contemporary Christian band MercyMe, which was formed in Edmond, the film was written by Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle.
Principal photography took place for “I Can Only Imagine” in Oklahoma and wrapped in January 2017. The film utilized the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program administered by the Oklahoma Film + Music Office.
The cast includes Quaid (“Soul Surfer,” “The Day After Tomorrow”), Trace Adkins (“Deepwater Horizon,” “Mom’s Night Out”), Oscar-winner Cloris Leachman (“Young Frankenstein,” “The Croods”), Madeline Carroll (“Swing Vote,” “Machine Gun Preacher”), Priscilla Shirer (“War Room”) and, in his screen debut, Broadway’s J. Michael Finley (“Les Miserables”) as Millard.
The film is directed by brothers Jon and Andrew Erwin, whose previous credits include hit films such as “October Baby,” “Moms’ Night Out” and “Woodlawn.” Daryl Lefever and Cindy Bond produced the film alongside co-producers Josh Walsh and Joe Knopp and executive producers Travis Mann, Simon Swart and Scott Brickell.
As previously reported, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin last month signed House Bill 3473 into law, which made “I Can Only Imagine” the state inspirational song. The signed legislation will be presented to MercyMe at the band’s June 9 OKC concert at Frontier City. You can find more concert information at https://www. frontiercity.com/entertainment/concerts/.
