Police ID man killed near downtown
Oklahoma City police on Wednesday released the name of a man killed in a fight earlier this month near downtown.
About 7:40 a.m. on May 5, police responded to 11 S Western Ave. after being told about a body. Officers found the body of Randy L. Smith, 56, with blunt force trauma to his face, according to a court affidavit.
Investigators reported finding a “metal junction box and broke metal pole” that was smeared in blood. Blood splatter was also found on the wall of a nearby business and along a fence near where Smith was found.
Officers found a homeless camp nearby and took several people into custody to be interviewed at police headquarters. During an interview with Trevor Nathan Wise, 33, he told officers “I beat him up.”
Wise said Smith had been causing problems at the camp and refused to leave, so he and a few other people physically removed him from the camp. About an hour later, Wise said he saw Smith in the area again and left to get the metal pole with the junction box, according to the affidavit.
After returning, Wise said he struck Smith in the face twice before “the junction box separated from the pole.” He then left to “smoke methamphetamine” before coming back to the camp to sleep.
Wise, who had blood on his shoes and jeans while detectives were interviewing him, said he was upset Smith wouldn’t leave the area when he was told to, but said he later felt bad for “what he had done.”
He was charged with first-degree murder on May 10 in Oklahoma County District Court.
