WORKSHOPS

COMMONWEAL­TH URBAN FARMS

The following workshops are located at CommonWeal­th Urban Farms, 3310 N Olie Ave. Workshops are $10 per session, $15 per couple or pair, and free to volunteers. Full season price is $100 for 18 workshops. Pay on-site with cash or check for individual classes or purchase a season membership online. No registrati­on required. Go to commonweal­th urbanfarms.com for informatio­n or season passes. Pocket Gardens, 11 a.m. to noon May 26. If you have room for a pot on the patio, you can grow a pocket garden. See examples of plants that can be tucked into the smallest of spaces and participan­ts will get to help plant several on-site pocket gardens.

The Other Bees — Native Bees in Oklahoma, 11 a.m. to noon June 9. Learn about the lives of the Mason and Leafcutter bees and build bee nest boxes to encourage these gentle but important pollinator­s to come to our gardens. Leafcutter bee cocoons will also be available for sale.

Re-connecting to Earth Medicine: Herbs and their Healing Properties, 11 a.m. to noon, June 30. Enter the world of herbal healing by using our senses to identify different medicinal plants on an herb walk. Instructor is Stephanie Holiman, who recently returned to Oklahoma after living in Chile for 20 years, where she directed the organic gardening center Huerto Hada Verde.

Growing Marvelous Melons, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, second floor conference room. Micah Anderson, Langston University Extension, will teach the ins-and-outs of growing various melons. Cost is $10 for members, $12 for nonmembers. Register by May 15.

Tomato Titans: An Introducti­on to Growing Tomatoes, 10 a.m. to noon, 2nd Floor Conference Room and garden grounds. Cost is $10 for members, $15 for nonmembers. Register by May 29.

Soil: The Key to a Healthy Garden, 1 to 3 p.m. June 9, 2nd Floor Conference Room and garden grounds. Learn the basics of soil and steps to creating great compost including how to conduct and understand the results of a simple soil test, how to amend your soil and the 10 most common garden weeds (and their solutions). Cost is $8 for members, $12 for nonmembers. Register by June 5.

Garden Maintenanc­e Part 1, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. June 23, Commonweal­th Urban Farms, 3310 N Olie Ave. Elia Woods, of Commonweal­th, will offer a behind-the-scenes visit to her urban farm and address some of the most essential tasks in maintainin­g a healthy edible garden: watering and fertilizin­g. Cost is $14 for members, $18 for nonmembers. Register by June 19.

Each month will feature different plants from our outdoor collection that make great choices for our region. Self-guided plant tour handouts are available in the South Lobby. Free. Walkups welcome.

Central Oklahoma Bonsai Society 30th Annual Show 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 2, Will Rogers Exhibition Center, 3400 NW 36. No trees will be available for sale. Admission is free.
