Rockets hire new football coach
Mount St. Mary has hired former Douglass football coach Willis Alexander as its new head football coach.
Mount St. Mary announced Tuesday on Twitter the hiring of former Douglass football coach Willis Alexander as its new head football coach.
Mount St. Mary lost head coach Derick Perkins earlier this month when he accepted a graduate assistant position at Texas Tech.
Alexander coached for 11 years at Douglass, helping lead the Trojans to a Class 3A title in 2010 and 91-41 overall.
In March of 2017, Douglass announced Alexander was no longer the football coach but neglected to give a reason why. Alexander was then terminated from Douglass and Oklahoma City Public Schools in November for undisclosed reasons.
Alexander takes over Mount St. Mary after the Rockets went 5-5 in 2017. The year before, Mount St. Mary made the playoffs for the first time in more than 20 years.
Millwood running back lands Alabama offer
In December, Millwood running back Marcus Major Jr. only had one scholarship offer.
Now the national champs have come calling.
Major announced on Twitter on Tuesday that he had received a scholarship offer from Alabama. Major already has offers from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, TCU, Tennessee, Texas and USC.
Millwood repeated as Class 2A champs this past season behind the work of Major on the ground. The 6-foot, 190-pound back rushed for nearly 1,200 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground while catching 23 passes for almost 500 yards and five additional scores.
Alabama offered Millwood receiver De’Mariyon Houston last month.
Michael Cutter Scholarship awarded
When former Putnam City West great Michael Cutter was diagnosed with ALS, the Patriot community rallied around him.
A scholarship was founded in Cutter’s name, awarded to a deserving Putnam City West senior.
On Tuesday night, Tate Gooch was awarded the $1,500 scholarship.
Gooch, a defensive end for Putnam City West’s football team, finished the year with 41 tackles, including three sacks and nine tackles for a loss. Gooch plans on attending UCO next fall.
His brother Trey Gooch won the scholarship last year.
