Sounds score in ninth to nip Dodgers

NASHVILLE, TENN. – Steve Lombardozz­i hit a gamewinnin­g single the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Nashville Sounds a 3-2 walk-off win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers Monday afternoon at First Tennessee Park.

The Dodgers had a 2-0 lead through three-and-ahalf innings but the Sounds scored twice without a hit in the bottom of the fourth. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth.

Jake Smolinski led off with a single against Dodgers reliever C.C. Lee, who was then replaced by Adam Liberatore. On Liberatore’s first pitch, he hit Beau Taylor, putting runners at first and second base. Sheldon Neuse then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third base.

After intentiona­lly walking pinch hitter Josh Phegley to load the bases, Lombardozz­i sent the first pitch he saw over the head of Jacob Scavuzzo in left field for the game-winning hit. It marked the fifth walk-off win of the season for the Sounds and fourth walk off loss of the season for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers (30-18) lost Monday despite outhitting the Sounds, 10-4, and not allowing an extra-base hit. B.J. Boyd led off the bottom of the first inning with a single for the Sounds, and they did not get another hit until there were two outs in the eighth inning. The Dodgers scored in the second when Henry Ramos led off the inning with a double and came home two batters later on a RBI single by Danny Espinosa. In the fourth, Kyle Garlick singled with one out and stole second base. Ramos followed with a bloop RBI single to left field, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. The Sounds (26-24) scored twice in the fourth without a hit, the result of back-to-back walks to open the inning then a throwing error by first baseman Tim Locastro. The error resulted in one run scoring and putting another runner on third, who then scored on a ground ball and force out at second base.

Dodgers starting pitcher Daniel Corcino gave up just one hit over six innings and two unearned runs. Lee (2-2) took the loss.The Dodgers and Sounds play the rubber match of the five-game series at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.
