Jaxon Dowell of Oklahoma Christian School and ShaeBug Scarberry of Purcell are The Oklahoman’s All-City Golfers of the Year and headline the All-City boys and girls teams.

EDMOND — Jaxon Dowell received a tough lesson as a freshman. In the biggest moments, he needed to be his best, particularly in the state tournament against the state’s top golfer.

“Playing freshman year, I knew that next year I had to play perfect golf,” Dowell said. “I had it circled on my calendar for the whole year knowing that I had to be prepared for this tournament”

The Oklahoman’s AllCity Boys Golfer of the Year was flawless when it mattered most this spring for Oklahoma Christian School. Up against Christian Heritage star Logan McAllister on the final day of the Class 3A tournament, Dowell proved he learned from his first high school season.

He beat McAllister, won the Class 3A individual title and led OCS to a second straight team title all by shooting 10-under par in the three-round tournament.

Everything simply clicked for two days.

For a sophomore who set lofty preseason goals, it was perfect timing. He planned to win both titles. He also wanted to shoot 6-under par for the state tournament.

But up against McAllister, a senior signed with Oklahoma who is ranked in the top 15 nationally, there is a lot of pressure. McAllister is intimidating.

Dowell didn’t let that bother him this time.

They played multiple times against each other in the spring, with McAllister winning the majority of the tournaments. Dowell studied and prepared.

“He can be very intimidating just because he’s played in some of the top junior tournaments in the world, he’s won lots of tournaments and his ranking’s really high,” Dowell said. “I want to be like that, just have that dominating factor that I can win every golf tournament I play in.”

Dowell has two more seasons to work to become the dominant force he plans to be when he heads to OU for golf, joining McAllister. Perhaps he’ll even work to shoot 20-under par in the state tournament.

“The goals are going to get better every year,” Dowell said.
