Edmond North soccer player Daryl Dike was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year on Wednesday.

Dike, who is also The Oklahoman’s All-City Player of the Year, scored 19 goals and totaled five assists while leading the Huskies to the Class 6A state semifinals. He also broke the Class 6A state record for career goals with 71.

He has signed with Virginia.

“Daryl Dike is the best high school soccer player I’ve ever seen play the game,” Choctaw coach Eric Jenkins said in a release. “His athleticism is unparalleled at this level. He can beat you all by himself and he’s fearless in his approach.”

Dike is now a finalist for Gatorade’s national player of the year award. He will also select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant from the Gatorade Play It Forward program.

Adamson headed to Eastern Michigan

Putnam West girls basketball coach Carlos Adamson is headed to the collegiate level.

Adamson, The Oklahoman’s Big All-City Coach of the Year, was recently named an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University, the school announced.

“I have known Carlos since 2002 when we both worked Oklahoma Basketball camps," Eastern Michigan coach Fred Castro said in a release.

"Since then, he has built two powerhouse high school programs in Oklahoma and Florida. He has an amazing ability to build genuine relationships with his players and get the very best from them. I could not be happier to have Carlos and his family here in Ypsilanti.”

Attempts to reach Adamson have been unsuccessful.

Adamson spent the past four years rebuilding the Patriots into a powerhouse. The season before his arrival, they won just one game. Putnam West made the state tournament the past two seasons, including March’s state runner-up finish.

Before Putnam West, the Edmond Memorial graduate coached at Hollywood Christian High School in Florida.

Joining Eastern Michigan’s staff reunites Adamson with former Putnam West star Areanna Combs, who recently transferred from Oklahoma State.
