A 16-year-old boy was arrested Monday after police were tipped off about a social media message in which he claimed he killed his parents.

About 7:15 p.m. Monday, a Westmoore High School student told Oklahoma City police that his friend, Dakota Kosyan, had sent him a Snapchat message about the killings, according to a police report.

Officers arrived at the parents’ home in the 8400 block of S Camay Avenue, but received no answer after knocking on the front door. An officer noted the front door was unlocked and police announced their presence multiple times, but no one came to the door.

Attempts to reach family by cellphone also failed and a tactical team robot was called to the scene. Shortly after, police saw Kosyan’s mother coming out of the home’s hallway. Officers asked her to come outside.

Officers said she was “visibly shaken and scared,” and the robot was sent inside in an attempt to locate the teenager. The mother said she was sleeping in a back bedroom and didn’t know police were outside until one of her son’s friends called her.

Police called Kosyan’s father, who said he was at work and was safe. Several minutes later, Kosyan came from around a fence with his hands in the air and was taken into custody.

Investigators said Kosyan told his friend that he was just joking about the message. He reportedly told his friend “I pulled my 9 and she dared me so I did it.” A message from the friend told him he should not shoot or kill his parents “no matter how irritating they can be.”

When asked if his mother was still alive, Kosyan replied, “No she’s beat me so many times in the past. This was … payback.”

The mother told police she was “very afraid” of her son and that she feared for her life. She said she had been having problems with him for some time and thought he may have “mental problems.”

She told officers that she wanted to pursue charges and did not want the “system to be easy on him because he is a threat” to others and himself.

Kosyan was arrested on a complaint of conspiring to perform an act of violence and taken to the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police spokeswoman Megan Morgan said it is against the law in Oklahoma to make any threat against others.

Oklahoma state law divides types of threats into three categories with varying punishments. The first, attempting, conspiring or endeavoring to perform an act of violence involving or intended to involve serious bodily harm or death of another person, is a felony, punishable by imprisonment for not more than 10 years.

The second, threatening to perform an act of violence involving or intended to involve serious bodily harm or death of another person, is a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment in the county jail for a period of not more than six months.

The third, devising any plan, scheme or program of action to cause serious bodily harm or death of another person with intent to perform such malicious act of violence, whether alone or by conspiring with others, is a felony, punishable by imprisonment of not more than 10 years.
