Where to look for help to figure out what’s ‘in’

- BY CALLIE ATHEY, LILLIEBETH BRINKMAN AND HELEN FORD WALLACE [THINKSTOCK IMAGE]

QUESTION: I am totally insecure about my wardrobe and what is “in” for fashion. I am in my mid-50s and need some help. Are there advisers available to help me? When

I go to parties, the younger people have really short skirts, and I know that people my age should not be wearing those. Do you all have any ideas what might be right for me? I am medium height and weight and can fit into most anything my size. Any ideas?

CALLIE’S ANSWER: I am sure there are people who can help you where you purchase your clothes. No. 1 tip is to make sure YOU feel good in it. If you feel confident, it will make your outfit that much better! I would also say to make sure you are in the right “season” with whatever you are wearing. Happy shopping!

LILLIE-BETH’S ANSWER: Shop at local stores that specialize in ladies’ fashion, and they can help advise you. Also, check out fashion magazines for style ideas that you can adapt for your age and budget.

They usually show couture outfits, and they are sometimes outrageous, but you can pick up some idea of where fashion is headed. And ask your friends — my daughter always gleans what’s in style from her school-aged friends, and sometimes as we get older, we forget that we can do the same from our own friends.

While you don’t have to follow all the trends and you don’t want to look ridiculous chasing them, you also don’t want your wardrobe to be stuck in another decade. So look at what stores are showing in their stores, ask people who know, observe what you see at these events and enjoy your new looks.

Buy clothes that feel good to you and wear them with confidence. That will be as much in style than anything. Your question reminded me that I need to all of these things I mentioned as well. Also, Linda Miller, who answered in this column, is a great resource; check in by reading her blog at https://newsok. com/blogs/fashion-matters. She has an eye for what works locally.

HELEN’S ANSWER: You are lucky that you are a size that most clothes will fit. Maybe short skirts are not for you, but comfortable clothes are, and hopefully when you go shopping, the store clerk can give you some excellent pointers.

Look in magazines for styles that you like and you think might look good on you. If you have a friend with great taste, ask her to shop with you. Always purchase clothing that fits your life style or job and buy clothing that is within your budget.

GUEST’S ANSWER:Linda Miller, fashion expert and fashion blogger: Don’t feel insecure because you don’t know what’s in fashion. Invest in clothing that makes you feel good, that looks good on you and fits your body, lifestyle and personality.

Classic pieces such as a great white shirt, a fitted jacket, dark straight-leg pants, a sheath dress and anything animal print, are always in fashion, and more importantly, stylish. Neutral colors are timeless. Punctuate your wardrobe with a few pieces each season that are of the moment, but make sure they’re right for you. Florals, subtle shine for day and the color lavender are strong trends now. Accessories are always easy updates, too. Maybe a handbag in a bold color or a pair of shoes with a kitten heel.

If you’re looking for help to start updating your wardrobe, shop one of the locally owned boutiques. Owners and sales staff are knowledgeable and helpful.
