Family genealogists shouldn’t neglect to gather stories
EDMOND — “Leaving a Lasting Legacy ... Conducting a Life Story Interview” will be the topic at the Edmond Genealogical Society’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1315 E 33rd.
Jan Beattie, president of the Oklahoma Home & Community Education Genealogy Group in Oklahoma City, will present the program. Beattie is also Edmond Genealogical Society board member/secretary.
Beattie, a native of California, came to Oklahoma more than 35 years ago to attend college and never left. Now, she is married with two children and retired from the medical field. She is involved in several genealogy and lineage-based societies and loves to share her knowledge with others. She has presented numerous presentations, seminars and workshops across the state on topics relating to genealogy and family history.
While researching family history, people might may spend a lot of time gathering dates, places and relationships. Although tremendously important, those researching their family tree shouldn’t neglect to collect the most important part of their family history — the stories, a news release stated.
Monday’s program will offer guidelines, tips and ideas on how to interview relatives, the types of questions to ask, and things to do to trigger memories in order to get stories recorded so they are not lost to time.
The Edmond Genealogical Society meeting is free and open to the public. Parking and entry to the church is through the rear of the building. The church is fully handicap accessible.
