7-on-7 showdown set for Saturday

Though the summer has just begun, football fans can get a taste of fall gridiron action this weekend.

The Skordle Showdown, a 7-on-7 football tournament, will take place at Norman North High School on Saturday.

Teams from across the metro will face off in a battle of offensive and defensive skill position players.

At Norman North, the home team Timberwolv­es will host Del City, McGuinness, Midwest City, Moore, Mustang, Putnam City North, Stillwater and Westmoore from Class 5A and 6A.

From the smaller classes, squads from Alva, Casady, Cashion, Chisholm, Crossings Christian, Heritage Hall, Perkins-Tryon and Stroud will square off.

In Bixby, teams from the Tulsa area will also play each other.

Broken Arrow, Jenks, Owasso, Sand Springs, Shawnee, Tulsa Washington and Tulsa Edison will fight it out in the large school showdown. Beggs, Blackwell, Coweta, Dewey, Lincoln Christian, Locust Grove, Nowata and Tulsa Kelley will face each other.

The winner from the West competitio­n and the winner from the east are scheduled to play each other in Stroud on Sunday.

Moore’s Larrison wins Gatorade award

Moore thrower Patrick Larrison was named the Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year on Thursday.

The Moore senior capped off his senior year by winning his third straight discus title and set a new state meet record of 210-feet and 9 inches to do it.

The award is given to an athlete who excels both on the field and off. Larrison boasts a 3.07 GPA.

Larrison, who signed to throw at Kansas University next year, also won gold in the shot put competitio­n.

“Patrick is one of the most determined athletes I have ever been around,” said Moore coach Stefan Seifried.

“He continues to work yearround to become one of the best athletes in the nation.”

The Gatorade Oklahoma Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year went to Jenks runner Ally Ryan for the second straight year.

Ryan is a two-time 800meter state champion and state record holder in the mile and 800-meter run.

Choctaw hires basketball coach

Choctaw High School has hired a new boys basketball coach.

The school announced the hiring of Jermaine Simpson this week as its next head coach.

Simpson previously worked as an assistant for the Midwest City girls basketball team as well as a coach for the Oklahoma Run PWP AAU basketball team.

Choctaw finished 12-12 this past season.
