SoonerCon to feature ‘Fantastic Four’ editor

If you’ve jumped in fear at the murderous antics of Michael Myers in Rob Zombie’s two “Halloween” films, you might have SoonerCon guest Glenn Garland at least partially to thank.

SoonerCon is the Oklahoma City metro area’s sci-fi/fantasy convention that dates back to 1986.

Garland has edited nearly all of Zombie’s films and soon will be working on the upcoming Rob Zombie-directed sequel to “Devil’s Rejects,” “3 From Hell.”

“With Rob, I feel like he is trying to get as much good footage as possible,” Garland says. “He has a good eye.”

Garland also was the editor of the never officially released “Fantastic Four” film in 1994.

“That was one of the first movies I worked on,” Garland said. “I was very excited.” Garland talked to The

Oklahoman about some of the challenges with the early “Fantastic Four” film.

“The director was a huge fan, and we thought, ‘Well we don’t have a lot of money to make it into what we think it should be, but what we can do is focus on the dysfunctional family,’ and that’s what we tried to do as much as we could with a very limited budget.”

In 2015, he was extensively featured in the documentary “Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s the Fantastic Four.”

“I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s one of the best Fantastic Four renditions,” Garland said. “I think that it’s kind of great that of all the superhero movies, the one that was very cheap that was done as a labor of love has stood the test of time.”

Garland also is an editor on an episode of season three of “Preacher,” based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Season 3 of Preacher premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. Central.

“When you’re editing you’re constantly making decisions on each and every cut,” Garland said. “Each and every cut has to have a good reason for being. And I kind of equate it to, when you’re writing, you’re writing with words; when you’re editing, you’re writing with images.”

Garland’s SoonerCon schedule is available at www.soonercon.com/ guests/glenn-garland/.

The SoonerCon convention celebrates its 27th show this year. The show was revived in 2006, and this year more than 2,000 attendees are expected. The original iteration of the convention took place from 1986-1997.

SoonerCon 27’s theme is “Beyond the Veil.” According to information from the convention, this year’s program will feature themes of exploration, imagination and observation. Urban fantasy, paranormal romance and horror genres are among those featured.

Overall, SoonerCon features more than 100 guests, including comicbook artists and writers, novelists, painters, actors and more.
