Source: Cavs to make qualifying offer to Hood

A person familiar with the decision says the Cleveland Cavaliers will extend a $3.4 million qualifying offer to restricted free agent forward Rodney Hood.

The person says the team will make the offer ahead of Friday's midnight deadline.

Cleveland.com first reported the team's plans.

The 25-year-old Hood came to Cleveland from Utah in that flurry of trades executed at the Feb. 8 deadline by general manager Koby Altman. Hood struggled to blend into Cleveland's rotation, but he's young, inexpensiv­e and the team believes he can get better.

Wizards send Gortat to Clippers for Rivers

Seemed fairly clear that Marcin Gortat and the Washington Wizards were ready to part ways. Now they will.

The Wizards traded Gortat, their starting center, to the Los Angeles Clippers for guard Austin Rivers on Tuesday night. Both players are entering the final season of their contracts and are set to earn similar salaries, making a straight-up exchange work under NBA rules.

The 34-year-old Gortat is a durable, screen-setting big man who has played 12 years in the league, the past five with Washington.

Silver gets extension

NBA Commission­er Adam Silver has received a five-year contract extension, a reward for accomplish­ments that include rapid growth in the value of franchises and attendance records around the league being set annually.

Silver, 56, led a very smooth series of negotiatio­ns with the NBA players union on the way to a new collective bargaining agreement in 2016.

Lakers extend qualifying offer to Randle

The Los Angeles Lakers have extended a $5.6 million qualifying offer to forward Julius Randle, making him a restricted free agent.

The Lakers made the move Wednesday, ensuring they can match any offer sheet from another team signed by Randle starting on July 8.

Spurs promote Hammon

The San Antonio Spurs announced Wednesday that they have promoted Becky Hammon, and that she will fill the spot vacated by James Borrego on the team's roster of assistant coaches. Borrego left the Spurs to become the coach of the Charlotte Hornets. Hammon has been a member of the San Antonio coaching staff since 2014.
