Students win History Day honors
Ten students representing three Oklahoma schools received recognition for their projects in the 2018 National History Day contest held June 10-14 at the University of Maryland, College Park. This year’s theme was “Conflict and Compromise in History.”
Braxton Thompson, Kenzi Nix and Kylie Nix of Canton Elementary School received the African American History Special prize for their exhibit “Governor Raymond Gary and the Better Schools Amendment.” Their teacher is Penny Heath. Kasidee Pope, also from Canton Elementary, received the History of Agricultural and Rural Life Special Prize for her exhibit “A Conflict of Nature.” Her teacher is Dora Fuqua.
Audrey Thiessen, Isabella Butzer and Mailee Reavis of Classen School of Advanced Studies in Oklahoma City earned the Outstanding Oklahoma Entry, Junior Division Award for their exhibit “The Textile Strike of 1934.” Their teacher is LaRadius Stephens. Kasen Cooper, Nathaniel Masters and Brendan Raper of Morrison High School were awarded the Outstanding Oklahoma Entry, Senior Division for their documentary “From Turmoil to Truce: The Irish Troubles.” Their teacher is Patty Sanders.
Book sale planned at History Center
The Oklahoma Historical Society Research Center will conduct its annual book sale July 18-21 at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive. The sale will include books on a variety of topics, featuring many rare and out-ofprint titles.
Visitors can shop for reproductions of historic posters, maps, and photographs; record albums; microfilm and collectibles. The Oklahoma Genealogical Society will have genealogical publications for sale. Book sale hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 18-20 and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 21.
The book sale is a fundraiser for the OHS Research Center. Proceeds will support efforts to collect items of historical significance, provide programming for researchers and school groups, and offer resources online. The Research Center archives documents, books, photographs, genealogical information, American Indian records, audio, newspapers, maps, oral histories, film and video related to Oklahoma.
