Broken Arrow’s Kaiser plays receiver with attitude

Matt Kaiser plays receiver like a lineman.

That’s was the best and most accurate description Broken Arrow head coach David Alexander could come up with for his 6-foot-3, 205-pound wideout.

High praise too. Alexander, a former Tulsa offensive lineman played seven seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles and another for the New York Jets.

“I appreciate Matt’s willingness to go play the way he does,” Alexander said. “If it’s a run he’s going to go and run down and block a guy into the bench and then he can lineup the next play and make a spectacular catch.”

Kaiser, a soon to be senior for the Broken Arrow Tigers,

is ranked at No. 21 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30 rankings for top recruits in the state.

With scholarship offers from Air Force, Army, Dartmouth, Eastern Michigan, as well as Pittsburg State and UCO, Kaiser said schools are beginning to take notice and express appreciation for his physical playstyle at what is normally considered a diva position.

“I like to make sure I’m blocking every play,” Kaiser said. “If I can knock guys around the first few plays of the game they will remember that. I like to make sure they are scared of me.”

Last season for the Tigers, Kaiser recorded more than 40 catches for nearly 700 yards receiving and six touchdowns.

Kaiser spends his summer days rotating between his baseball travel team and morning workouts with the football team.

Kaiser is also receiving interest as a baseball prospect. The outfielder said he has a scholarship offer from Seminole State and is speaking with several other schools.

Kaiser said he’s still up in the air about which sport he hopes to play at the next level, but is excited knowing he has options.

“Definitely a confidence booster,” Kaiser said. “You hear people talking about offers and just knowing you don’t have to worry about getting the looks during the season really takes your mind off of it.”

Despite being away from the team during conditioning drills, staying in shape is no problem for Kaiser.

“If you are a two- or three-sport guy like he is, your No. 1 sport has to be the weight room,” Alexander said. “High school wise he’s a mismatch for everybody. For 75 plays he’s physically going to dominate that guy across from him and he usually wears the guys out he’s going up against because of that stamina he’s built up.”

Kaiser is fired up for this coming football season. He expects Broken Arrow to compete for a gold ball and hopes to show a few more opposing cornerbacks his offensive lineman attitude.

“Fire off the line and knock them down and they’ll run away from you after that,” Kaiser said. “Usually makes catching a little easier.”
