Q&A WITH KITT LETCHER

Finding reliable air conditioning contractors requires research

Q: Where should consumers start when looking for a reliable air conditioning contractor or service?

A: Do your homework!

Research the company’s background and licensing to ensure everything is current and up to date, and always confirm that the company is licensed and insured. Consumers can always visit bbb. org for the BBB business profile of any service company you plan to hire so you can learn more about its reputation and history of complaints.

Q: What should consumers look at when hiring a company or service?

A: We all want to find the best work and the best price, so make sure you compare prices and service packages. BBB always recommends on any work or service getting at least three estimates for any repair, maintenance or replacement. Make sure the bids are in writing and provide a full description of the services to be provided and the materials to be used.

Q: What about warranties on equipment?

A: Review your warranty coverage. Find out if the company you’re looking at offers any type of warranty or guarantee on their work or parts and equipment they install. Make certain you understand the terms and conditions of the coverage. Also, be sure to check the warranty on your current air conditioning unit to determine whether any repairs or replacements may all ready be covered.

Q: What are some ways consumers can save money or things that might be important to know when looking at the financial impacts of a service or new system?

A: Ask about energy efficiency. Many new air conditioning units are manufactured to be more energy efficient than others. Look for the Energy Star label to find out more about products that may cost a little more up front but save you in energy costs over time. Some models may even be eligible for a tax credit. Ask your HVAC contractor (heating ventilation and air conditioning) to verify tax credit eligibility and provide the Manufacturer Certification Statement for the equipment you plan to purchase.
