Additional permit applications filed this week show continued work to add an Amazon Delivery Center to the company’s growing Oklahoma City presence.

Amazon.com Services Inc. has leased and is planning to remodel, a 60,000-squarefoot warehouse at 4401 E Hefner for use as its Delivery Center, the final stage in the Amazon delivery process. According to a building permit application, the remodeled area “provides space for a package delivery service.”

“Consumer packages are brought in via semi-truck and remain in sealed boxes,” the application said. “Packages are then sorted and placed on mobile carts (for less than 24 hours) before being placed in delivery vans.”

The company has received its building permit, which was applied for in April, and submitted for additional permits since then, including for plumbing, electrical and most recently fire alarms work.

No shelving, racking or high piled storage will be present or utilized for packages.

The Delivery Center will be remodeled at an estimated cost of $4 million. It will occupy a portion of the same building formerly used by the Keebler Company.

Operations will occur 24 hours per day, according to the permit, though it is unclear if this will bring same-day shipping options to Oklahoma City.

Amazon could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The Fulfillment Center — set to be constructed at 9201 S Portland Ave. near the Will Rogers World Airport— will be a starting point for customers’ delivery following an online order. When an order is placed, that inventory is plucked from storage at a fulfillment center

and begins the delivery process.

Items are later shipped to a Sortation Center, like the one at SW 15 and

Council Road.

These centers are used to organize packaged items before being shipped to Delivery Centers.

Oklahoma City recently approved a $1.7 million incentive for the construction of the Fulfillment

Center, which is expected to bring an initial 53 jobs at a starting salary of $60,000 a year and employ 1,750 when completed.

Capital investment for the development of the center is estimated to be $153 million.
