Rays put All-Star lefty Snell on DL with shoulder fatigue

- FROM WIRE REPORTS

The Tampa Bay Rays have put All-Star lefthander Blake Snell on the 10-day disabled list with fatigue in his throwing shoulder.

Snell pitched 1 2/3 innings in the All-Star Game on July 17, five days after his last start for the Rays.

Snell had an MRI on Monday that showed no structural issues. The team is hopeful that Snell will miss just one start.

"I think it'll be quick, I honestly do," Snell said. "It might be just fatigue from the first-half workload, and I'm hoping all I need is a little extra rest."

Snell is 12-5 with a 2.27 ERA in 20 starts. He is tied for second in the AL in wins, third in ERA and eighth in strikeouts with 134 in 119 innings.

Tebow done for the season

New York Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow is set for hand surgery Tuesday, dashing his hopes of playing in the majors this year.

The 30-year-old outfielder will have surgery in New York to remove his broken right hamate bone, an injury that occurred Thursday while swinging a bat for Binghamton against Trenton in the Double-A Eastern League.

The former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner was hitting .273 with six home runs and 36 RBI in 84 games for Binghamton. He doubled in the Eastern League All-Star Game on July 11.

"It's about a six-to-eight week recovery, so effectively his season is over," Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said after Tebow was examined Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Tebow hit .301 in June for the Rumble Ponies and .340 in 15 games in July.

Dodgers call up Verdugo from OKC

The Los Angeles Dodgers have put infielder Justin Turner on the 10-day disabled because of a strained groin and recalled outfielder Alex Verdugo from TripleA Oklahoma City before Monday night's game against the Phillies.

Turner was injured Sunday against Milwaukee. He's batting .259 with five homers and 20 RBI for the NL West leaders. Turner made his season debut on May 15 after his left wrist was broken by a pitch in spring training.

Verdugo batted .265 (9 for 34) with four doubles in nine games with the Dodgers earlier this season. He hit .349 with eight homers and 37 RBI with Oklahoma City.

Cespedes may need foot surgery

New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes had an MRI and was examined by a specialist in an effort to determine whether he needs surgery on both feet that would sideline him for 8-to-10 months.

"I guess what we're looking to find out is if it has progressed to the point where it's something that cannot be managed with the conservative treatment that we've been using," Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said Monday.

Cespedes homered in Friday night's victory at the Yankees in his return from the DL after missing two months with a strained right hip flexor.

He disclosed after the game that calcification on both heels has bothered him for 15 years and caused the lower-body injuries that have limited him to 119 games in 1½ seasons since he signed a $110 million, four-year contract.

Cespedes has not played since, and New York was awaiting a report and recommendation from the doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Brewers losing starting pitcher for season

Milwaukee Brewers left-handed starter Brent Suter will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Suter had an MRI on Monday that revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He left Milwaukee's 11-2 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday after three innings when he felt pain — the team initially diagnosed it as a strain, the same injury that led to a stint on the disabled list late last month.

Suter said he would have the elbow surgery in the near future.

The 28-year-old Suter had pitched a career-high 101 1/3 innings this season, going 8-7 with a 4.80 ERA in 20 appearances, including 18 starts. He's helped the Brewers stay near the top of the NL Central race.
