JONES — A boil order for the town of Jones could be lifted as soon as Thursday afternoon or Friday, the mayor said, as officials continue working with state environmental authorities to solve a contamination problem.

Authorities issued the boil order after E. coli was found Saturday in the town’s water supply. Strains of E. coli can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia among other illnesses.

The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality advised residents to use only water that has been brought to a full, rolling boil for at least one minute. Residents may also use bottled water, or water from another source for cooking, drinking, washing dishes and brushing teeth.

Mayor Ray Poland said Monday the contamination has affected 520 households. Poland has met with DEQ officials. Treatment of the water supply should begin Tuesday, he said. The water lines will also be flushed.

“Once the water comes back fine they will lift the order,” Poland said.

Jones United Methodist Church has been distributing bottled water to households affected by the problem.

“Donations have been flowing in there from different people, not just in Oklahoma, but all around us,” Poland said. “Their donations are greatly appreciated.”

Those in need or those who want to donate bottled water may contact the church at 405-3992926.
