MWC to celebrate new renovations at Optimist Park
MIDWEST CITY — The public is invited to a grand opening celebration for the newly renovated Optimist Park.
The city of Midwest City Parks and Recreation Department will host the celebration at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the park, 1001 S Westminster Road.
The renovation began in the spring, and construction was performed by crews from parks and recreation, as well as street maintenance. The renovation features new, innovative playground equipment.
Optimist Park has two play areas, including an area for children ages 2 to 5 years old, and an area for children ages 5 to 12. The play area for the younger children includes multiple slides, tunnels, a learning center, and a mirror and climber. This area also includes the city’s first Expression swing that allows an adult and toddler to face each other and swing simultaneously.
The playground for the older children includes a new play set with multiple climbers, slides, a learning center and a fireman’s pole.
This area also includes a dragon slide with a play tunnel under it and a two-bay swing set with four swings.
A first for Midwest City is the green rubber mulch in the play areas.
A large shade structure is between the two play areas. The park also includes benches and tables in both playgrounds.
The remodel included extending water to the existing pavilion. The pavilion also is being repainted.
Cost of the project was just more than $100,000. The work performed by city crews included demolition, site construction, equipment installation, concrete work and other miscellaneous construction. The value of the work performed by city crews is about $100,000.
