LC Greenwood discusses famous name, his role in the OSU offense

STILLWATER — LC Greenwood spent last season like many Oklahoma State receivers, buried down a depth chart that included the likes of James Washington, Marcell Ateman and Chris Lacy.

Now, Greenwood, a 6-foot-3, 212-pound redshirt freshman, is ready for his shot in the Cowboys’ receiver rotation.

For the record, “LC” is just a nickname. His full name is Shamond Syrese Greenwood, but he did find out while he was in high school that he has a family connection to the Pittsburgh Steeler great L.C. Greenwood, though not by blood.

Greenwood has a chance to bring some size to the Cowboys’ receiver group, and he’s got some speed to go with his big frame.

Here’s what Greenwood, who is from Garland, Texas, had to say about his role in OSU’s offense this fall:

Q: How has preseason camp been for you, knowing you’ve got a chance to be in the receiver rotation?

A: I learned a lot last year, just sitting back and watching James, Marcell, Chris. I got a lot of mental reps in there, seeing their moves and techniques and becoming a better receiver. So this year, I’m trying to utilize that on the field, and it’s really been successful for me. It helped me out a lot.

For fans who haven’t seen you, what would you say are the strengths of your game?

A lot of 6-foot-plus receivers aren’t as fast as me. Having the receiver corps that I play with will help get me open and be successful.

Was last year a mental challenge, because you knew you had so many veterans in front of you and you weren’t going to crack the rotation?

Yeah, coming out of high school, everyone wants to be that guy, but obviously, coming here and having to sit back and watch, you know, it’s a struggle. But once I got into it, I was like, “Alright, I can do this.” And I felt like that helped everybody who’s back this year get better as a team.

Once you realized that your named was the same as a legendary NFL player, did you start to research who that guy was?

Yeah, I found out, probably my ninth grade year. It was crazy. Me being young, I didn’t really know who he was. But once I learned about him, I watched some old videos and it’s cool to see.
