Thoroughbr­ed season opens Friday

The 2018 thoroughbr­ed horse racing season opens Friday at Remington Park in Oklahoma City. Post time is 7 p.m.

Key racing dates during the season include the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby on Sept. 30; the Oklahoma Classics on Oct. 19; and the Springboar­d Mile on Dec. 19.

On Saturday, Remington Park will hold its fourth annual Remington Bark charity dog event. The plaza will be open to dogs and their owners at 6 p.m., with live racing beginning at 7 p.m.

Regular weekly racing during the thoroughbr­ed season will be 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Live racing also is set for 3 p.m. on Labor Day, Sept. 3.

Remington Park is celebratin­g its 30th birthday this season. The first horse race was held Sept. 1, 1988.

OU announces women's basketball schedule

Oklahoma women's basketball non-conference schedule includes a Dec. 19 home matchup against national power Connecticu­t among its five home games, OU announced Thursday.

The matchup against the Huskies is one of potentiall­y five non-conference games against teams that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago — UConn, DePaul, South Florida, Western Kentucky, and a potential matchup against Tennessee in the Bahamas.

The Sooners will host an exhibition Nov. 5 against Northeaste­rn State at Lloyd Noble Center before opening the regular season Nov. 9 against Western Kentucky.

Other highlights of the schedule include a trip to the Bahamas to open the Junkanoo Jam against University of Alabama-Birmingham on Nov. 22 before playing either Clemson or Tennessee in the following game.

OU also will travel to Auburn on Dec. 2 for the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

After that, the Sooners will return home for three games, including a Dec. 9 matchup with DePaul, which beat Oklahoma in the first round of last season's NCAA Tournament.
