OU position outlook: Tight ends/H-backs

- JOE MUSSATTO, STAFF WRITER

Here's a look at Oklahoma's tight ends/H-backs: Tight end starter Grant Calcaterra (Soph., 6-4, 221) Key backups Brayden Willis (Fr., 6-3, 221) Lee Morris (RJr., 6-2, 212) H-back starter Carson Meier (RSr., 6-5, 254) Key backup Jeremiah Hall (RFr., 6-2, 252)

This season: Grant Calcaterra is the tight end Oklahoma will turn to in the post-Mark Andrews era. The Southern California native played in all 14 games last season as a true freshman, collecting 10 catches for 162 yards and three touchdowns.

Brayden Willis could find a role as a true freshman while Lee Morris has 26 games of experience, mostly on special teams.

As Calcaterra tries to replace Andrews at tight end, Carson Meier has the unenviable duty of filling in for do-it-all H-back Dimitri Flowers. Tight ends/H-backs coach Shane Beamer argued that Flowers might’ve been Oklahoma’s most valuable offensive weapon a year ago.

Not much separates what Lincoln Riley’s offense requires of H-backs and tight ends. They do everything from blocking in the run game to splitting out wide in the pass game.

The future: Oklahoma’s tight ends room is young with Calcaterra and Willis leading the way as a sophomore and freshman.

Redshirt freshman Jeremiah Hall will back up Meier and presumably be the future starter at H-back. Beamer lauded Hall’s ability, but is waiting to see more consistency from the Charlotte, N.C., native.
