Scouting Florida Atlantic

2017 record: 11-3, 8-0 Conference USA

Best player: Junior running back Devin Singletary was the nation’s fifth-leading rusher last season with 1,920 yards. He led the country with 32 rushing touchdowns, nine more than former San Diego State back

Rashaad Penny who finished second in rushing touchdowns. Singletary’s nickname is “Motor,” and ESPN ranked him the 50th best player in college football.

The case for Florida Atlantic: The Owls ranked eighth in the country last season averaging 40.6 points per game. Coach Lane Kiffin’s career has been tumultuous, but few doubt his offensive acumen. The Owls, like the Sooners, will be breaking in a new starting quarterback, but Singletary should carry the load. Oklahoma’s defense won’t be gifted a warm-up game to start the season.

The case for Oklahoma: Rodney Anderson running behind OU’s veteran offensive line should be difficult for the FAU front to handle. And while the Sooners have struggled plenty on defense, Mike Stoops’ side will get to greet an inexperienced quarterback in front of the home crowd. OU has won 12 consecutive home openers.
