Scholarship offered for best car design

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Students enrolled in Oklahoma college and university design and engineering schools are being given a chance to design a potential new concept car as part of a scholarships competition sponsored by the Metropolitan Auto Dealers Association.

The association, owner of the Oklahoma City Auto Show, will award a $1,000 scholarship on Nov. 7 to the winner in a competition that calls for 3-D schematic, computer-aided designs to be submitted by Oct. 26.

It also will manufacture and produce the car, include it in the 2019 auto show’s advertising campaign, and then display the vehicle at the show and at other special events, officials said.

“We are extremely excited to be able to offer this great scholarship opportunity for the highly skilled students here in Oklahoma,” Laine Diffee, the association’s chairman, stated in a release announcing the competition.

“This is a great chance for students to work on building their portfolio while potentially earning scholarship money they can use toward completing their degree.”

Interested students should email madapeter@ coxinet.net for more information, officials said.

ACOG names new executive director

The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments has named an experienced municipal and regional planner as its next executive director.

Mark W. Sweeney began in his new post this week, and is meeting with elected and appointed city and county officials as he familiarizes himself with the association’s staff, internal resources and bylaws. Sweeney also is planning “visioning and input” events where people will be invited to share what kinds of services they expect the association to provide to member communities.

“The visioning and input sessions are especially critical,” Sweeney stated in a news release. “They are paramount to understanding what the region wants to become and what services it wants ACOG to provide.”

Sweeney has more than 25 years of experience in city and regional planning. He most recently served as executive director of the Shreveport-Caddo Metropolitan Planning Commission in Louisiana.

Deadline nears for Amazon applications

Job seekers looking for employment opportunities with Amazon in Oklahoma City have limited time remaining to apply in-person, company officials have said.

The deadline for walk-in candidates to submit a job application is 4 p.m. Friday at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City, inside the school’s Engineering Technology Center, near NW 10 and Portland Avenue.

Amazon has been taking applications there the past two weeks as it seeks to fill part-time positions for its distribution center, delivery center and Whole Foods location.

Officials said candidates who can’t make Friday’s walk-in deadline may still fill out an application online and schedule an interview at one of Oklahoma City’s Amazon locations.
