Donaldson activated by Indians, who will skip Kluber’s turn

-

Josh Donaldson was activated from the disabled by AL Central-leading Cleveland and made his Indians debut Tuesday night at Tampa Bay.

Cleveland also said 18-game winner Corey Kluber will not start this weekend, allowing him to get extra days off and to line him up for the postseason.

Donaldson was acquired from Toronto on Aug. 31. The 2015 AL MVP had not played in the major leagues since May 28 because of a left calf strain.

Jose Ramirez moved from third to second to make room in the field for Donaldson.

Jason Kipnis was moved from second to center field.

Grichuk returns to Blue Jays lineup

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Randal Grichuk was back in the lineup Tuesday night, two days after he crashed face-first into a guard’s metal chair.

He was injured when he slid while catching a foul ball at Toronto on Sunday.

A guard seated near the stands didn’t see Grichuk coming, and was holding a metal stool when the accident occurred. Concussion tests were negative. Grichuk was left with a bloody nose, swollen left eye socket and a few facial cuts.

“My mom always said I had a hard head. Guess she was right,” Grichuk posted Monday on Twitter.

Wright attempting comeback

David Wright took live batting practice Tuesday at Citi Field as the New York Mets captain tries to complete his comeback from a string of debilitating injuries.

The third baseman originally was scheduled to play defense in a simulated game as well, but those plans were scrapped on a drizzly afternoon because the infield was muddy. The 35-year-old Wright says he’s still trying to regain his timing, and he’ll need to see how he feels Wednesday before looking ahead to the next step.

The seven-time All-Star hasn’t played in the major leagues since May 2016 due to neck, back and shoulder injuries that required surgery.

A’s pitcher sidelined for season

Oakland Athletics lefthander Sean Manaea will have season-ending surgery on his left shoulder next week.

The Athletics made the announcement Tuesday. The A’s hold the second spot in the AL wild-card race.

Manaea has been on the disabled list since Aug. 26.

The 26-year-old Manaea went 12-9 with a 3.59 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 160 2/3 innings this year.

He threw a no-hitter April 21 against Boston when he struck out 10.

Nationals dump fading Phillies

Chew on this: Spencer Kieboom chipped a tooth, then cracked a smile on his first major league home run.

Kieboom pointed at the hole in his mouth to show that, yes, he’s a pretty good gap hitter. The rookie catcher lost a tooth hours before he homered, Erick Fedde pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and the Washington Nationals beat the fading Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 on Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader. The Phillies, who were 15 games over .500 in early August and in the thick of NL playoff race, had lost three straight games and were 6-15 since Aug. 18 before the second game of the doubleheader.
