TULSA — Macy’s is hoping to lure in deal-savvy shoppers with the opening of a Backstage fashion outlet location at the department store’s Woodland Hills Mall location in Tulsa.

Macy’s Backstage is a store-within-store experience offering shoppers access to both traditional Macy’s and the off-price retail stores.

“The store-with-ina-store offers more convenience for customers to shop in one spot and provides them the brands and styles that our customers like,” said Daniel Donagan, store manager.

The outlet store has 13,800 square feet of dedicated space within the existing Macy’s location. It is the second location in Oklahoma. An Oklahoma City location opened earlier this year in Penn Square Mall.

Shoppers will be able to easily tell the difference between the stores because of coloring, signage and layout style. The clothes in the Backstage are sorted on racks by size instead of by style or brand, for instance.

“We don’t send stuff here from other stores to sell as clearance,” Donagan said. “They will do markdowns and some clearance eventually, but we are opening with all new merchandise.”

Backstage is the only off-price retail store in Woodland Hills Mall.

Backstage has new clothes and items coming in daily, so the selection is current and will rotate frequently, Donagan said.

“We are able to react to what our customers want, and hopefully we can be able to do a lot of that,” he said.

“There are a lot of advantages to the way this is set up so we can keep it fashionable.”

Seven free-standing Backstage stores opened in 2015 and 2016 in the Northeast and Texas, and since that time Macy’s has opened more than 100 store-within-store locations.

“Locations are carefully selected based on what’s surrounding the location and the customer mix,” Donagan said.

Backstage offers an array from men’s and women’s clothes and shoes to athletic apparel, handbags, jewelry, housewares, luggage and furniture and home décor.

There is also a selection of toys and kid’s shoes.

The items in Backstage were purchased at a discount, so there are no sales or coupons for those items, Donagan said.

A grand opening celebration is set for 10 a.m. Saturday with a ribbon cutting, and the first 200 customers will receive gifts.
