Chapman could return from DL next week

-

New York Yankees AllStar closer Aroldis Chapman could return next week from nearly a month on the disabled list.

Chapman has not pitched since Aug. 21 because of left knee tendinitis, which has bothered him throughout the season. The 30-year-old left-hander threw a bullpen session Wednesday and was to return to New York for treatment. Manager Aaron Boone anticipates another bullpen session this weekend, then a return.

"Hopefully back with us, if everything goes well, sometime next week," Boone said before Wednesday's game at Minnesota.

Chapman has a 2.11 ERA and 31 saves in 33 chances. Dellin Betances has been the primary closer during Chapman's absence.

Darvish undergoes elbow surgery

Chicago Cubs righthander Yu Darvish has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to clean out loose debris.

Darvish was declared out for the season last month after an MRI revealed a stress reaction in the elbow.

The team announced that the procedure, termed a debridement, was performed on Wednesday by Texas Rangers physician Keith Meister, who has a history with Darvish.

The Cubs said Darvish would be ready for spring training.

Snell takes no-hit bid into 7th, Rays top Indians

Blake Snell took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and got his major leagueleading 19th win, leading the Tampa Bay Rays over the Cleveland Indians 3-1 on Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Snell (19-5) lost his bid when Jose Ramirez led off the seventh with his 38th homer.

Snell won his teamrecord seventh straight start, striking out nine and walking two in seven innings.

He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 16 consecutive home starts.

Chaz Roe and Jose Alvarado each got three outs, completing a one-hitter. Alvarado got his eighth save in 11 chances.

Cleveland's magic number to clinch a third consecutive AL Central title remained at three.

Red Sox become 1st team to clinch playoff spot

The Red Sox became the first team in the major leagues to clinch a playoff berth and did not celebrate.

"Any time you make the playoffs and give yourself a chance to be that last team, it's a pretty special thing," Brock Holt said. "We're excited by that, but we've got more work to do."

Holt pinch hit in the seventh inning and hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in a 7-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night in Boston that guaranteed the Red Sox no worse than a wild card berth.

Their postgame celebration was lining up for routine high-fives and heading back to the clubhouse.

Starter Chris Sale came off the disabled list and pitched one scoreless inning, striking out two and throwing 26 pitches.

Sale has been slowed by inflammation in his left shoulder, and the Red Sox had said they would ease their ace back into action.
