Santa Fe dominates tourney

In what head coach Will Ethridge said was a preview of the state tournament, Edmond Santa Fe came out on top.

Edmond Santa Fe hosted some the state's best volleyball teams this past week for the Heather Harkness Memorial Tournament and bested them all, taking home the team win. Edmond Santa Fe defeated Edmond North, Bishop McGuinness, Westmoore and Edmond Memorial before taking down Edmond North again during the championship match. Edmond Santa Fe had three girls on the All-Tournament team including Rylen Moore and Rori Chartier. Santa Fe senior Kaeli Robinson was named tournament MVP.

Other all-tournament performers included Edmond North's Kamryn Bacus and Gracie Burleson, Edmond Memorial's Regan Pendleton and Allie High and Deer Creek's Teagan Polcovich and Maicee Morgan.

Carl Albert’s depth paying off

Carl Albert pitcher Hannah Williams was sick and unavailable Tuesday for a key district game against rival Guthrie. And it didn’t really slow down the Titans.

Nia Long, not normally a pitcher, stepped into the circle and held strong as Carl Albert’s offense did the rest in a 9-4 victory Tuesday to grab control of District 5A-1.

“She’s good enough to throw, so we went with her,” Carl Albert coach Colin White said. “She did well.

“I was super impressed and pleased with the way my girls performed. I was a little concerned playing them with Hannah because I knew (Guthrie) was better.”

Long allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks. She also struck out two. Her biggest blemishes were two home runs by Karrah Dean.

But Carl Albert’s Zadie LaValley and Aerin Talley also homered. LaValley is a Tulsa commitment who crushed a home run to left-center field.

Even Casey Angle, who filled in for Williams in the batting order, had two hits and an RBI.

“They’ve been swinging pretty good all year,” White said. “From 1-9, there’s not an easy out. You have to work pretty hard to get them out. We can swing with just about anybody in the state. I don’t know what it is, but when girls show up for me they usually swing for some reason.”

Deer Creek sweeps Edmond North

District 6A-1 is loaded and Deer Creek is in control.

The Antlers finished a sweep of Edmond North on Tuesday with an 11-8 victory that featured plenty of offense to move to 6-2 in district play.

Edmond North and Mustang are also 6-2. The Antlers have yet to play Mustang.

But they’ve beaten North twice, including a 2-1 walk-off win in August. On Tuesday, they scored three runs apiece in the first three innings and built an 11-3 lead in the fifth.

“We knew that first game was not what anybody expected,” Deer Creek coach Lacy Darity said. “We knew there would be a lot more runs scored this game. We emphasized to the girls we needed to start early.”

Hailey Evans drove in four runs for Deer Creek as she continued her strong year in the cleanup spot.

“She’s came up huge for us in a lot games,” Darity said. “She’s been pretty clutch all season.”
