Foles set to start for Eagles vs. Bucs; Wentz not cleared to play

-

Nick Foles made the right choice when he picked the Eagles over the Buccaneers last season.

Foles has a Super Bowl MVP award to show for a tough decision that came down to familiarity. Now he'll get a chance to play against Tampa Bay on Sunday because Carson Wentz still isn't ready to return from knee surgery.

"It was close," Foles said about choosing to return to Philadelphia to play behind Wentz instead of going to the Buccaneers to be the backup for Jameis Winston.

Foles had committed to Arizona State in high school when Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter was the coach of the Sun Devils. But the Philly connection won out.

He is 6-1 filling in since Wentz tore two knee ligaments in Week 14 last year. That record includes playoffs and the final regular-season game, in which Foles played only one quarter.

Panthers sign tackle Clark, place Williams on IR

With injuries piling up on the offensive line, the Panthers have signed veteran free agent offensive tackle

Chris Clark.

Carolina officially placed starting right tackle and former Oklahoma standout

Daryl Williams on injured reserve Wednesday with a knee injury.

The move means both starting offensive tackles are now on IR. Carolina placed left tackle Matt Kalil on IR before the season opener against Dallas with a knee injury.

Williams and Kalil will each miss a minimum of eight games.

Clark, an eight-year NFL veteran, joins the Panthers after spending the last three seasons with the Texans.

He has played in 106 games with 53 starts.

Bills to start Allen at QB

For the Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen's time is now.

Bills coach Sean McDermott said Wednesday the rookie quarterback will make his first career start on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Allen replaces secondyear pro Nathan Peterman, who struggled badly in a 47-3 blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1. Peterman threw for 24 yards and two interceptions before being replaced by Allen in the second half.

Raiders bring back Martavis Bryant

Two days after their passing game went flat in the second half of a season-opening loss, the Oakland Raiders have brought back wide receiver Martavis Bryant.

Bryant, who was with the Raiders in training camp after being acquired in a trade from Pittsburgh before getting released on the final day of roster cutdowns, signed a oneyear contract and rejoined the team for practice Wednesday.

Coach Jon Gruden said it's possible Bryant could play Sunday in Denver.

Lions waive RB Zenner

The Detroit Lions waived running back Zach Zenner from the reserve-injured list.

Zenner hurt his back against Cleveland in the preseason finale.

He earned a spot on the Lions' roster as an undrafted rookie in 2015. He emerged as Detroit's No. 1 running back in 2016 when he closed the regular season with more than 200 yards of offense over the last two games.
