Fiesta Bowl of 2007 a regular topic for Boise State

- SCOTT WRIGHT AND BERRY TRAMEL, STAFF WRITERS

Boise State coach Bryan Harsin doesn’t bring up the game that made his university famous. But if someone else brings up the 43-42 Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma, Harsin will gladly oblige.

“I’ve been asked that question a lot,” said Harsin, who was the offensive coordinator for that epic game and now is in his fifth year as the Boise State head coach. “We’ve obviously talked about that game for many years. I think that’s its own kind of separate entity. I really do.

“Because that game was so special for a lot of reasons and the way the game was played, it’s one of those things, I was a part of it, and I’ve accepted it in college football history as its own separate entity and everybody who ever had a chance to watch is going to remember it. That’s kind of separate from our program at this point.”

The Broncos come to Stillwater as the highest-profiled football program outside the Power 5 conferences. Boise State has gone on to win two more Fiesta Bowls since that overtime classic against the Sooners.

“Our success over the years, it’s not just based off one game,” Harsin said. “I think it’s hard not to sit there and just be a team that maintains. We’re trying not to be that team. We’re trying to get better. We’re trying to grow our program. We’re trying to do things that have never been done here.

“I don’t ever think that game is an anchor that holds us back. I think it’s still one that inspires people here and this program, that we have opportunities like this, so let’s keep shooting for it. You gotta have something to chase.”

Sanders salutes Cornelius’ performance

Oklahoma State’s Spencer Sanders can’t yet speak to the media under Mike Gundy’s first-year player rule, but the true freshman let it be known where he stands on the Cowboys’ quarterback play so far this season.

When a fan suggested on Twitter that Sanders should be starting ahead of fifthyear senior Taylor Cornelius, Sanders spoke up.

“Thanks man but you gotta give credit where credit is due,” Sanders wrote. “(Cornelius is) doin one heck of a job out there.”

Through two games, Cornelius has completed 50 of 75 passes for 728 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions. Sanders, Texas’ high school Player of the Year last season, is expected to redshirt this year, though he could potentially play in as many as four games and maintain redshirt status.
