Beer sales could be coming to Sooner events
The University of Oklahoma has so far resisted adding beer sales at its sporting events — at least outside of premium seating areas.
University President Jim Gallogly brought up the issue Thursday during the OU Board of Regents meeting in Tulsa.
Gallogly said he planned on bringing a recommendation to the board soon. The board's next scheduled meeting is in late October.
Athletic director Joe Castiglione recently said the department had been studying the issue.
Oklahoma State began selling beer this season, selling 4,125 beers during its season opener against Missouri State and reporting no alcohol-related incidents.
“When we make our decision, it’s not going to be based on increased revenue. It won’t,” Castiglione told The Oklahoman recently. "Sure, it would be a positive net result, but it’s not enough to make us change our mind to do it. It’s going to be whether or not it’s an enhancement to the fan experience.”
Presidential parachute
The University of Oklahoma's ROTC program has planned several events leading up to OU's game against Army next Saturday, and one of those involves Gallogly jumping from a plane.
Gallogly will be one of several prominent OU figures who will participate in tandem skydive jumps with the Black Daggers, a U.S. Army Special Operations Command parachute demonstration team.
The jumps are planned for Friday. They will take off from Max Westheimer Airport in Norman and land in a field near Lloyd Noble Center.
Other notable jumpers include: OU provost Kyle Harper, regent Leslie Rainbolt-Forbes, softball coach Patty Gasso, football strength coach Bennie Wylie, OUPD chief Kent Ray, SGA president Yaseen Shurbaji, Cadet Nick Morris from OU ROTC and ROTC alum Keith Huffman.
The Black Daggers will then jump in the game ball on Saturday from 12,000 feet.
Oklahoma and Army kick off at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Oklahoma junior linebacker Caleb Kelly has been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Kelly is one of three Big 12 student-athletes among the 22-member group. The Allstate AFCA Good Works team was established in 1992 to recognize off-the-field efforts made by college football players.
Kelly has served food to needy families in the community, traveled with Sooners For Haiti and volunteered with youth camps and a camp for children with special needs, according to a release.
The Fresno, California, native has also served as president for OU's chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for the past two years.
Kelly is the fifth Sooner football player named to the AFCA Good Works Team. He joins Jacob Gutierrez (2006), Nic Harris (2007), Gerald McCoy (2008) and Quinton Carter (2010).
Kelly made the final roster of 22 award recipients from a list of 169 nominees.
Murray adds award
The awards keep coming Kyler Murray's way in a season that's only two-weeks old.
The latest honor for the Oklahoma quarterback is being named Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week.
Murray's performance last Saturday against UCLA had already earned him Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week.
Three Oklahoma quarterbacks have won Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Year awards: Jason White (2003, 2004), Sam Bradford (2008) and Baker Mayfield (2017).
