Arkansas still blowing leads after regime change
The 10-point lead for Arkansas in the fourth quarter at Colorado State might have felt secure in some places.
Not so much to those familiar with the Razorbacks under former coach Bret Bielema.
Sure enough, the Rams scored 17 unanswered points to earn its first win of the season, 34-27, and drop Arkansas to 1-1.
"We did not handle success well," new coach Chad
Morris said. "We lost our focus. We lost our attention of what got us to that point. We were one stop and one score away from that thing being over with."
When Morris was hired in late 2017, he inherited a team that had seen its fair share of squandered leads.
Of Bielema's 34 losses, Arkansas led going into the fourth quarter 13 times — that's a blown lead 38 percent of the time.
Bielema was dismissed after the final game last season — when Arkansas couldn't hold a fourth-quarter lead over Missouri.
Texas lineman released from hospital
Texas sophomore offensive lineman Patrick Hudson has been released from the hospital and returned to class a week after heat illness at practice sent him to intensive care.
A Texas spokesman said Hudson left the hospital Wednesday. There has been no announced timetable for him to return to football.
Hudson was rushed to the hospital on Sept. 8 after his body temperature rose too high and team medical staff couldn't get it down to normal levels despite putting him in a cold-water bath.
He was out of intensive care the next day.
Texas said Hudson stayed in the hospital as doctors ran further tests. The school has declined to give details because of health privacy concerns.
Maryland lineman Jordan McNair died of heatstroke June 13 after he was overcome at practice two weeks earlier.
Maryland placed coach DJ Durkin on leave and parted with its strength and conditioning coach.
Texas hosts No. 22 Southern California on Saturday.
Clemson will play despite hurricane
Second-ranked Clemson is the only major conference school in the Carolinas and Virginia that will play its scheduled football game this weekend as Hurricane Florence looms.
Several schools across the three states canceled, re-scheduled or relocated games ahead of the storm, citing safety concerns.
Clemson officials say they are monitoring the storm's path and believe there were no issues in playing Saturday's game against Georgia Southern. Clemson has moved up the start time to noon EST from the original 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
Boston College dumps Wake Forest
Anthony Brown threw two of his career-high five touchdown passes to Jeff Smith, and Boston College beat Wake Forest 41-34 on Thursday night in a game that started two hours early with Hurricane Florence approaching.
Brown was 16 of 25 for a career-best 304 yards with touchdowns of 27 and 71 yards to Smith, plus TDs of 35 yards to Kobay White, 29 yards to Tom Sweeney and 40 yards to Ben Glines for the Eagles (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). AJ Dillon, the ACC's leading rusher, ran for 185 yards with a 45-yard TD for the Eagles.
Georgia moves up time of Saturday's game
The kickoff for Middle Tennessee's game at No. 3 Georgia on Saturday has been moved to noon because of concerns about the impact of Hurricane Florence.
The game had been scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. kickoff.
Georgia announced the decision to move the kickoff time after "extensive evaluation involving the uncertainty of weather conditions on the East Coast, and consideration of all constituencies involved including fans, support staff, and law enforcement."
Charlotte knocks off Old Dominion
Chris Reynolds threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns and Charlotte beat Old Dominion 28-25 on Thursday night in a Conference USA opener played two days early because of Hurricane Florence.
Marquavis Gibbs and Juwan Foggie had interceptions on back-to-back Old Dominion possessions in the fourth quarter. After the first pick, Aaron McAllister caped a 12-play drive with a 14-yard scoring run to extend Charlotte's lead to 28-18.
