MUSTANG — An 0-2 start to the football season didn’t have Mustang panicked, and the Broncos showed Friday night against Westmoore that they still could be a factor in Class 6A-I as district play looms.

Chaz Meadows rushed for two touchdowns, and the Broncos’ defense came up with a pair of big stops in the second half as Mustang hung on for a 21-14 win over Westmoore at Bronco Stadium.

Mustang (1-2) opened the season with a 19-14 loss at archrival Yukon and the Broncos’ offense again sputtered last week in a 29-14 loss at Edmond Santa Fe. But the Broncos put together an 80-yard touchdown drive in the first quarter and were able to turn two Westmoore punting miscues into scores as well.

In the third quarter, the Broncos stopped Westmoore (2-1) on downs at the Mustang 19, and on the Jaguars’ final possession, which started at their own 20, Mustang didn’t allow a first down. Bradyn Jarmin broke up Dayton Wolfe’s desperation fourth-down pass intended for Andrew Metcalf with 1:51 left and Mustang ran out the clock from there.

“I’m so happy for this team to finally get a win,” Mustang coach Jeremy Dombek said. “It’s been so frustrating the last two weeks. We’re staring 0-3 in the face. For us to come out to get this kind of momentum and this good feeling about us heading into district play is exactly what we wanted. Now we’ve just got to take advantage of it.”

A failed fake punt attempt by Mustang led to a 33-yard field goal by Ryan Knight that put Westmoore ahead, but a 45-yard jaunt by scatback George Lonzaga led to a 15-yard touchdown run up the middle by Khary Brown and Mustang led 7-3.

Justin Wardlaw blocked a punt by Westmoore’s Jared Becerra to give the Broncos possession at the Westmoore 22 and three plays later, Meadows plunged in from the 1 to give Mustang a 14-3 lead.

A 76-yard interception return by Matthew Metcalf set up the Jaguars at the Mustang 7 with :05 left in the half, and Knight kicked a 24-yard field goal to pull the Jaguars within 14-6 by halftime.

Westmoore tried a fake punt in late in the third quarter, but the Broncos sniffed it out and stopped Colby Phillips for a 3-yard loss, giving Mustang possession at the Westmoore 47. Meadows, who had 71 yards on 19 carries, scored on a 15-yard run to make it 21-6.

Westmoore drove 87 yards for its only touchdown, a 21-yard pass from Wolfe to Dylen Taylor, and Wolfe hit Metcalf for a successful 2-point conversion. But the Jaguars’ usually potent passing attack managed only 97 yards as Wolfe and Jace Bohrofen combined to complete 10 of 28 attempts.

Mustang quarterback Hayden Conrad completed 9 of 18 passes for 139 yards, with Chris Doran catching three for 44 yards. Dombek said the Broncos are catching onto the system installed by new offensive coordinator Aso Pogi.

“I know fans are restless and we didn’t look so hot (offensively) game one, but people have to realize that we haven’t had a whole lot of work on this,” Dombek said. “We didn’t go through spring ball with this offense. The amount of improvement we’ve made in three weeks offensively, if we can continue to do that, I can’t wait to see what we’re doing in weeks eight, nine and 10.”
