Ross shines in Heritage Hall’s romp over Davis

Heritage Hall started slowly in its first two games, something coach Brett Bogert wanted to fix in Friday night’s home opener against Class 2A opponent Davis.

The Wolves did just that, jumping out to a 14-0 lead and cruising to a 36-7 win at Pop Murray Memorial Field.

Running back Billy Ross Jr. scored twice for Heritage Hall (2-1), which opens Class 3A district play next week against Mount St. Mary.

Ross set the tone early, hauling in a 25-yard pass from quarterback Robert Mbroh for one score and sprinting 65 yards for another.

Ross also prevented a Davis touchdown, running down Dakota Coberly at the 20-yard-line after Coberly had raced 58 yards untouched up the middle.

The tackle proved big. The Wolves gained five yards on their next four plays and turned the ball over on downs late in the second quarter.

“He’s a stud for us,” Bogert said of Ross. “He’d battled some injuries early on this season and he’s just kinda now getting back to full speed and it showed tonight.

“It was a huge play chasing that guy down because going in 15-7 and it’s a different game at halftime.”

Heritage Hall also scored on a 16-yard rushing touchdown from Conner Carey following a blocked punt, and a 61-yard passing touchdown from Mbroh to Phillip Smitherman to make it 22-0 early in the third quarter.

Backup Jackson Jobe also threw a scoring pass to Joe Washington covering six yards for the Chargers, who limited the Davis wishbone attack to 157 yards on 35 carries.

“They come ready to play, Bogert said.” It’s another rivalry. They’re physical; it’s hard to prepare for the wishbone in just two days

“I was really proud of the way our kids handled it and kinda shut down the rushing attack for the most part.

Davis (1-2) avoided a shutout on a 46-yard run by Matthew Dickerson with 3:05 left in the game.

“We didn’t execute as well as we wanted to. I didn’t do as good a job as I wanted to,” Davis coach Greg Parker said. “But I think we improved in a week, and it was against a really good football team.

“They’re tough. It’s Heritage Hall.”
