Kipchoge runs fastest marathon; Mayer sets decathlon WR

On a spectacular day for track and field fans, Eliud Kipchoge smashed the marathon world record in Berlin, just hours before Kevin Mayer of France set a decathlon world record in front of a home crowd in Paris on Sunday.

Kipchoge clocked 2 hours, 1 minute, 39 seconds at the Berlin Marathon.

The 33-year-old overturned the previous world record set in Berlin by fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto in 2014 by 1 minute, 18 seconds.

Kipchoge became the first person to finish a marathon in less than 2 hours and 2 minutes.

Competing at the Decastar event in Talence, southwestern France, world champion Mayer finished with a total of 9,126 points, improving on the previous record of 9,045 set by American athlete Ashton Eaton at the 2015 world championships in Beijing.

Yankees’ Judge could return to lineup this week

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said All-Star slugger Aaron Judge could return to New York’s lineup this week during a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.

Boone said Sunday that Judge is “getting real close” to returning from a broken right wrist. Judge has been cleared to play the outfield and run the bases, and he played two innings in right field Friday night. He’s still working his way back at the plate, though.

Judge hit off a high-velocity pitching machine prior to a 3-2 loss to Toronto on Sunday. He’s been taking batting practice on the field, and he might face rehabbing closer Aroldis Chapman in a simulated game Monday or Tuesday.

Chapman is working back from left knee tendinitis.

Cubs activate Heyward from DL

Outfielder Jason Heyward has been activated from the 10-day disabled list by the Chicago Cubs.

Heyward was not in the starting lineup Sunday against Cincinnati. He had been on the DL since Aug. 31 due to right hamstring tightness.

He is batting .275 with seven home runs and 52 RBIs in 114 games this season.

Also, infielder Tommy La Stella was scratched from the lineup about two hours before the game because of lower back tightness.

F1 leader Hamilton wins Singapore GP

Lewis Hamilton won the floodlit Singapore Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday to extend his championship lead over Sebastian Vettel to a commanding 40 points.

The Mercedes driver made a clean start and was largely untroubled as he beat Red Bull driver Max Verstappen by nine seconds, with Vettel much further back in third.

The four-time Formula One champion recorded his seventh win of the season and 69th of his F1 career.
