Oklahoma City Blue acquires rights to K.J. McDaniels

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Oklahoma City Blue announced it retained the returning player rights of K.J. McDaniels from the Grant Rapids Drive on Monday in exchange for the returning player rights of Daniel Hamilton and its G League first-round draft pick.

McDaniels, a 6-foot6, 205-pound guard, averaged 16.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 27.4 minutes per game for the Drive last season. McDaniels has played in 148 career NBA games with Philadelphia, Houston and Brooklyn, averaging 5.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. McDaniels last played in the NBA in 2016-17 with Brooklyn, but made $100,000 with Toronto last season.

Hamilton, a 2016 second-round pick of the Thunder, was on a twoway contract last season. He averaged 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game for the Blue in 94 G League games over two seasons. Hamilton was signed by the Atlanta Hawks in August to a 1-year minimum contract.

G-League contracts are with the league, not with the parent teams. McDaniels currently doesn’t have an NBA contract, but if he were to enter into a G League contract, the Blue, not the Thunder, would own his rights. The Blue would also own McDaniels' rights if he were to play overseas, then return and sign a G League contract.

If Hamilton does not make the Hawks and plays in the G League while not on assignment, he would play for Grand Rapids. Atlanta can still assign him to the Erie BayHawks and retain his rights since he’s under an NBA contract.

The Thunder's roster is currently at 14 guaranteed contracts, one short of the maximum allowed. McDaniels would have to be signed to an NBA contract in order to be added to the Thunder's roster since the Thunder has filled its allotment (2) of two-way contracts with the summer signings of Deandre Burton and Tyler Davis.
