LD Brown expected to return midweek after missing Saturday’s Boise State game

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State wrangled Boise State without one of its four primary running backs, but the Cowboys expect to have LD Brown back in practice by midweek.

Coach Mike Gundy said Monday that OSU's medical staff has told him Brown should return to practice by the middle of the week after the sophomore running back missed the Cowboys' 44-21 victory over Boise State with a right ankle injury.

"We'll see how he's doing," Gundy said.

Brown suffered the injury on a 14-yard rush late in the third quarter of OSU's victory over South Alabama on Sept. 8, his only carry of the game. After several Jaguars brought him to the ground, Brown tried to stand but dropped back to the turf, grabbing his right ankle. He gathered himself, managed to stand and hobbled off the field under his own power.

In the Cowboys' season opener against Missouri State, Brown rushed for 110 yards on nine carries, one of which was a 77-yard touchdown run.

Ogbongbemiga gets Big 12 special teams honor

OSU linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga earned Big 12 Co-Special Teams Player of the Week Honors, the league announced Monday.

Ogbongbemiga provided the first of the Cowboys' two blocked punts in Saturday’s victory, shifting momentum in a 7-7 tie in the second quarter. The Cowboys scored three plays later, taking a lead they didn’t relinquish.

Ogbongbemiga said after the game that he's always taken pride in special teams.

"It’s like the first play of defense," he said. "Punt and kickoff, the first play of defense."

Dru Brown getting reps as backup QB

Although he has yet to appear in a game, Dru Brown remains Oklahoma State's backup quarterback, Gundy said Monday.

Brown, a graduate transfer who played in 25 games with Hawaii, has yet to play for the Cowboys through three games because he is still learning OSU's offensive system, Gundy has said, but also because the Cowboys are trying to navigate college football’s new four-game redshirt rule. Brown is redshirt eligible.

Keondre Wudtee relieved starter Taylor Cornelius in the fourth quarter of OSU's first two games, both blowouts, but should the Cowboys need a replacement for Cornelius in a tight game, Brown has been viewed as the primary option.

"Every day, he is better and gets a little more adjusted to our system," Gundy said.

Brown arrived in Stillwater in late July and expected to compete for the starting job during fall camp, but Cornelius, a redshirt senior with four years of experience in OSU's offense, won the role comfortably.

He was responsible for three touchdowns Saturday, two coming on the ground amid his team-high 16 carries.

"We've been fortunate that we've been able to keep Taylor healthy," Gundy said. "We had to run him too much this week. ... I was concerned about that, just (because) behind him we don't have a lot of experience."

OSU-Kansas kickoff time announced

Oklahoma State's first road trip of 2018 comes with an early kickoff.

OSU's Sept. 29 game at Kansas will begin at 11 a.m. in Lawrence, it was announced Monday. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Networks.

The 3-0 Cowboys host Texas Tech at 6 p.m. Saturday. Kansas, off to a surprising 2-1 start, will play at Baylor at 2:30 p.m.
