Eight touchdowns just the beginning for El Reno’s Plumley

EL RENO — Dorian Plumley had no clue what his final numbers were following El Reno’s victory Friday against rival Chickasha.

He felt like he had a pretty good game, but in the heat of the moment the sophomore quarterback had not stopped to realize how many times he had crossed the goal line.

“I really had just been focused on getting better at making the right reads,” Plumley said. “This is my first year playing quarterback, so I’m really just trying to run the offense.”

So when El Reno coach Chuck Atchison hit him with the final stats, neither of them could really believe it.

Plumley scored eight touchdowns in El Reno’s 53-26 win, throwing for 256 yards and four scores while rushing for 121 yards and four more touchdowns.

“You look up at the end and say, ‘Gosh dang, he just scored eight touchdowns,’” Atchison said. “I don’t think this was some freak thing either. He’s super talented and he had a monumental game.

“And he’s going to continue to get better.”

The only person who seemed to realize what was going on? Plumley’s older brother Dyson, who was on the receiving end of two touchdown passes.

“After his first few runs I knew we were in store for a big, big night,” Dyson Plumley said. “I knew it was time to go, and it was gonna be big.”

Dorian Plumley said it’s been fun getting to team up with his brother on offense, but it took a bit to figure each other out.

“I can put it out in front of him and he can just go get it because he’s probably one of the faster guys we have,” Dorian Plumley said. “But it’s been really fun getting to play together, and we are really starting to get on the same page. “

Dorian Plumley played exclusively on defense last year, but Atchison approached him toward the end of the year to see if he would be interested in trying out at quarterback.

Plumley didn’t waste any time working to get a leg up. He attended quarterback camps around the country and worked throughout the winter and spring to try and develop as a passer.

“His upside is tremendous,” Atchison said. “He’s still learning the offense and figuring it out, but he can make all the plays and that’s what makes him dynamic.”

Dorian Plumley said this first taste of big success will only make him want to work harder as El Reno (2-1) hosts Western Heights this Friday.

“I’ve had a lot of people just telling me how good of a quarterback I am,” Dorian Plumley said. “That’s cool, but it’s just making me want to work harder and do better to keep moving up.”

Big brother Dyson is excited, too.

“Being the older brother and watching him come off like that and doing what he did makes me proud,” he said. “It makes me feel proud because I know it’s just the beginning.”
