Edmond Santa Fe shows efficiency in 42-7 win over Memorial

EDMOND — Efficiency was the key for Edmond Santa Fe in its rivalry game against crosstown Edmond Memorial.

All three phases of the team provided that immediately.

Santa Fe quarterback Kanan Hansen threw four first-half touchdown passes as his team defeated Edmond Memorial 42-7 at Edmond North stadium on Thursday.

The dream start for Santa Fe started with it forcing Memorial into a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession. A short Memorial punt was fair caught in heavy traffic at the Memorial 35-yard line, but a Memorial player hit the Santa Fe returner afterward to give Santa Fe its first offensive snap in the red zone.

Hansen hit Jack Woods in stride on their first offensive play for a 20-yard Santa Fe touchdown, the first of three passing touchdowns for the first quarter.

“Any time you get a start like that, it sets the tempo for the game and the mindset for the kids,” Santa Fe coach Kyle White said. “It kind of relaxes everybody. They get to settle in and go play ball.”

Hansen completed 16-for-24 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns. After his first pass to Woods, he threw two touchdowns to Trace Ford and another to Braden Reichert.

The senior quarterback had a running touchdown in the third quarter, his team’s final score.

“That’s the Kanan we know, and he expects to play at that level,” White said. “He’s played good for us all year, but it just quite hasn’t connected. Tonight he was on and the receivers were on the same page. Kanan is a great quarterback.”

Memorial scored its only points with two seconds remaining. Memorial linebacker Sam Taylor recovered a Santa Fe fumble with 1:19 remaining.

Memorial then converted a fourth down with quarterback Trace Evans scrambling for 11 yards before Evans found his receiver Aidan Hamlin for a two-yard score on the next play.
