OAFCon set to return to Norman

Now celebrating 51 years of fandom, OAF, or the Oklahoma Alliance of Fans, again hosts OafCon in Norman.

The group is hosting its annual show, Comic Book & Nostalgia Convention, aka OAFCon, in at the Embassy Suites Convention Center in Norman this weekend. Admission is free; for admission, attendees will be required to wear provided name tags.

OAFCon features comic books, fantasy art, toys, movie posters, old-time radio memorabilia and more. “Our shows are not like the larger mediathemed comic-con events,” organizer Bart Bush said at the convention website. “OAFCon is designed to be smaller with a greater focus on comics for sale, comic artists and comics history.”

OAF had its earliest meetings in March 1967, and by 1970, it was hosting Multicon in Oklahoma City and many conventions thereafter.

The hours for OafCon are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Embassy Suites Convention Center in Norman.

The show features a large dealers room and many rarities, from pulp novels to rare posters, art, comic books and more. Fans and attendees who want to show off their own rarities can do so at the show’s “Collectors Show and Tell.”

Guests set for the show include comics historian Roger Hill; comic-book writer, author and journalist John Wooley; OAF founder Robert A. Brown; comic strip creators Jack and Carole Bender; “Shadow” publisher Anthony Tollin; novelist and retailer Buddy Saunders; illustrator Kenneth Smith; and others.

Local comic creators, including newly named Skirvin Hotel artist in residence Jerry Bennett (“Nadir’s Zenith”) and S.A. McClung (“Displacements: Oasis”), also are expected to attend, as are Aaron Ballinger and Johnnie Johnson, of Tulsa’s Equinox Comics.
