Oklahoma’s top-selling Halloween candy is not what you’d guess

- Paula Burkes pburkes@oklahoman.com

Oklahoma’s No. 1 Halloween treat, as sold through a large online retailer, may just surprise you.

This is no trick: Oklahoma's No. 1 Halloween treat, based on pounds sold through a large online retailer, is ... Dubble Bubble.

The sugary pink chewing gum rose from No. 2 to take away the throne from Snickers. Meanwhile, Skittles bumped Butterfinger out of the top three spots.

That’s according to candystore.com, a bulk candy seller that’s analyzed 11 years of exclusive sales data.

Oklahomans last year bought 20,583 pounds of Dubble Bubble from candystore.com, followed by 9,817 pounds of Snickers and 8,346 pounds of

Skittles.

My friends on Facebook aren’t buying the results.

“Bubble gum over chocolate — what’s the world coming to?” said fellow Oklahoma State University alumna Laura Garrison Russell.

Echoed Midwest City High School Bomber Tricia Lippe Taylor, “(At our house), we throw away bubble gum. We like purple Skittles — and chocolate.”

Meanwhile, Bomber Laura Johnson Redmon said she avoids handing out bubble gum because younger kids can’t chew it. Instead, she opts for something soft and chewy.

“Can we all agree the basic hard candies are the least preferred?” posted my former boss Randy Sachs to my post of the survey on Facebook.

Utahans and Georgians might disagree, Randy. Jolly Ranchers are their No. 1 selling treat, per candystore. com. Montana shares the Dubble Bouble affinity with us, while residents of Massachusetts buy mostly Sour Patch Kids. That’s no surprise. I can close my eyes and see my sweet-toothed nephew as a boy (now 27!) devouring them!

Connecticut residents

buy after this girl’s heart — Almond Joy, while Salt Water Taffy, the best bulk seller in Washington and Nebraska, and Hot Tamales, Indianans’ pick, performed much better than you’d expect.

Overall, the top 10 national sellers through candystore.com are Skittles, M&Ms, Snickers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Starbursts, Candy Corn, Hot Tamales, Hershey’s, Tootsie Pops and Jolly Ranchers.

Candy favorites differ from leading bulk candy sellers, as it turns out.

Candystore.com surveyed 40,000 customers and considered lists from 12 reviewers, including BuzzFeed and Business Insider, to compile the top 10 candy favorites. Those include Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (which tromped all others), Snickers, Twix, Kit Kat, M&M’s, Nerds, Butterfinger, Sour Patch Kids, Skittles and Hershey Bar.

American’s least favorite candies are Circus Peanuts, Candy Corn, Wax Cola Bottles, Wecco Wafers, Peanut Butter Kisses, Tootsie Rolls, Smarties, Licorice, Good and Plenty, and Mary James.

Have a spooky — and delicious — Halloween!
