Newcastle has three throw for touchdowns

Newcastle coach Jeff Brickman felt like his guys were close.

To start the year, Newcastle has faced off with some stiff competition with Class 5A Noble, a resurgent Clinton, one-loss Blanchard and undefeated Tuttle.

After a 12-point loss to Anadarko in Week 5, Newcastle was sitting at 0-5.

“We are a very young team,” Brickman said. “It’s just taking time to get acclimated to varsity football.

“I felt like once we put it all together we would be all right.”

This past week, Newcastle was able to do that, taking down Class 4A Chickasha 35-28 in a wild game on offense for the Racers.

Newcastle had three different players throw a touchdown pass against Chickasha, as quarterbacks Chase Fox, Andrew Shumard and running back Eman Carter all managed to find the end zone through the air.

“I don’t know if we’ve ever had that happen,” Brickman said. “Overall it was a really good team win, and we had a lot of guys that contributed to it.”

The feeling among the Newcastle players this week is one of glee, Brickman said. He had toed the line of telling his team how tough the first few weeks of the season would be, but also tried to encourage them to fight.

“We’ve just been working through it each week,” Brickman said. “We knew it would allow us to see what we would need to do to get better and we think it’s done just that.”

Hennessey picks up its first win to keep playoff hopes alive

Hennessey coach Rick Luetjen intended for a better start than 2017 and for the Eagles to be more diverse on offense. Then the injuries piled up.

Hennessey’s top two quarterbacks suffered injuries in the first two games along with several other players, leaving an offensive lineman to play running back.

Depth was critically tested as Hennessey started 0-5. But with players slowly rejoining the lineup, Hennessey picked up a big 28-22 win last week against Luther.

“The good feeling was getting healthier,” Luetjen said. “We don’t have a lot of depth this year. Those guys have really hurt not being here. We’ve been trying to pull some strings and do everything we can to be competitive.”

Last season, Hennessey started 0-6 but still made the playoffs, advancing to the second round. Luetjen is hoping that experience will help this team rebound.

Ideally, Hennessey would like to win out, guaranteeing a playoff spot. But district leader Oklahoma Christian School comes to town Thursday as a big challenge. Even with a loss, Hennessey could win the final three games and have a shot at the playoffs.

“These kids knew there was a chance if we keep working hard and get after it,” Luetjen said. “They never let up.”
