Nonprofit plans Pup Cup

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Locally based nonprofit Pastime with Purpose will hosting the second annual Pup Cup OKC 5K-9 from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at Stars and Stripes Park, 3701 S Lake Hefner Drive.

The event will feature on-site dog-friendly and fitness-oriented vendors, music, food trucks and more. Each runner will receive a Pup Cup T-shirt, finisher medal, and schedule permitting, the opportunity to meet Andrew Heaney, Oklahoma native and starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels. Heaney and other professional athletes have joined together with Pastime with Purpose to help raise awareness and deliver impact to underserved groups in the United States and abroad.

“My wife and I love dogs. We have two black labs who we can’t imagine life without them. Sadie and Charlie are therapeutic for me and bring balance and peace to my life,” Heaney said. “By helping dogs, we ultimately help humans, especially through supporting dog therapy programs in children’s hospitals like (The Children’s’ Hospital at OU Medical Center). Those dogs and their handlers make a world of difference for kids going through, a lot of times, painful and scary experiences.”

This year’s Impact Partner for the Pup Cup is The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center’s Dog Therapy Program. Awareness Partner is Fields and Futures.

Registration is $35 to run solo, and $45 to run with your furry friend. Packet pickup is from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Red Coyote in Classen Curve. Register at www. pastimewithpurpose.org.
