Graphic design instructor wins honors

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

A graphic design instructor at Francis Tuttle Technology Center has been named Region IV Teacher of the Year by the Association for Career and Technical Education.

Liz Dinkins is a finalist for ACTE’s National Teacher of the Year. The awards honor educators who demonstrate innovation in the classroom, commitment to their students and dedication to career and technical education. The national winners will be announced Nov. 28.

Francis Tuttle Superintendent Tom Friedemann said Dinkins does a great job in Liz Dinkins

the classroom every day.

Dinkins was recognized for her work in August 2017 when she was named Oklahoma CareerTech Teacher of the Year.

“Innovation in the classroom has a lot to do with not being afraid to fail,” she said. “We try new things, our administration supports us, and sometimes we hit a home run. But if we don’t, it’s something we learn from.

“Many of the awesome projects my students work on come from the learning and perfecting process of real-world application.”

CHICKASHA Grant lets USAO expand MakerSpace

The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma is expanding its STEMfocused MakerSpace in Nash Library thanks to a $20,000 grant from Midship Pipeline Co.

The funds will allow USAO to purchase a second 3-D printer; a laser cutter so students can fabricate parts from many types of material; 10 Pi-Tops, special laptops that help users learn to code, create and invent; and 10 Yogibo pod chairs, high-quality beanbag chairs that are well-suited to working with laptops and reading.

The renovated space will be fully operational for the spring term, USAO President John Feaver said. The MakerSpace will be available to students from any major, as well as faculty and staff.
