Tulsa Union takes down Moore behind Thompson

- Adam Kemp akemp@ oklahoman.com

A nearly perfect first-half performance from Tulsa Union quarterback Peyton Thompson wrapped the game up early.

On his second play of the night, Thompson dropped back to pass and launched a sky-high rocket.

The ball traveled 50 yards, dropping perfectly into the hands of senior receiver Spencer Shadle as he stepped into the end zone.

It would become a common sight throughout the night as Tulsa Union would easily dispatch Moore 55-12 behind a potent offensive attack led by Thompson.

Moore's first drive showed promise as the Lions traveled 63 yards in two pass completions from junior quarterback Daniel Hishaw Jr. to senior receiver Dylan Buchheit.

But an errant backward pass from Hishaw was scooped up by Union (5-2) and returned to midfield to set the Redskins up for the 50-yard touchdown pass from Thompson.

Moore (4-3) would score on its next possession on a 14-yard pass from Hishaw to Drew Johnston to make the score 7-6.

But the Lions would never draw any closer.

On Union's next drive, Thompson led the offense down the field with passes of 11 and 18 yards to Tory Dillard and Shadle before finding Dillard again, this time for an 8-yard score to make it 14-6.

After a quick three-and-out by Moore, Union got the ball back in great field position at the Moore 37. Union would only take six plays to score, this time on a 9-yard run by senior running back Darius Boone to make it 21-6.

At one point in the second quarter, Thompson connected on 12 straight passes. He finished the game 17-of-21 for 321 yards and three touchdowns, the last of which came on a 30-yard pass to Xavier Dandridge with 2 minutes to go before halftime.

The win put Union in first place in District 6A-I-2 as it came into the game tied with Moore at 3-0 in district play.

Boone also had a big night for Union, rushing 15 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns. On offense, Union racked up 522 total yards and 20 first downs, completely controlling the game from its first possession.

Moore had lots of success passing in the first half as Hishaw found Buchheit nine times for 136 yards.

But Union tightened everything down after halftime, limiting Moore to just 17 yards passing after the break.

Moore would score again early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Hishaw, but that would come too late.

Hishaw finished 15-of-25 for 210 yards and two total touchdowns, while Buchheit had 10 catches for 144 yards.
