Top 10 games of Week 8

-

Check out The Oklahoman’s top 10 high school football games for Week 8.

District titles are nearly claimed and playoff spots are on the line as the high school football season reaches the home stretch.

This week’s top 10 games features rivalries with big playoff implications and the possibility that undefeated teams will be no more.

It’s a short week with fall break, placing most games on Thursday. Here are The Oklahoman’s top 10 games of Week 8:

1. Class 6A-II No. 5 Midwest City (5-2, 3-1) at No. 4 Del City (6-1, 4-0)

A long-standing rivalry gains added importance this week with district title hopes on the line.

Both need the win to stay in the district title hunt. A win for Midwest City keeps the Bombers in the hunt. A win for Del City keeps momentum going for the Eagles with powerhouses Lawton and Stillwater looming.

It’s also the perfect time for talented players such as Bombers’ quarterback Preston Colbert and Del City receiver Jeff Foreman to shine.

2. Class 3A No. 1 Heritage Hall (6-1, 4-0) at No. 4 Kingfisher (5-2, 4-0), Friday

Another rivalry, this is the teams' first meeting since 2015, when Heritage Hall dominated 45-7.

But these are new teams with new star players such as Kingfisher’s Jett Sternberger and Heritage Hall’s Jaden McDaniel. A Chargers win all but locks up the district.

3. Class 4A No. 3 Broken Bow (6-1, 4-0) at No. 1 Poteau (7-0, 4-0)

Two dominant teams meet to become the district title favorite. Broken Bow has allowed just 48 points while dealing four shutouts. Poteau has yet to score less than 35 points.

4. Class 4A No. 2 Tuttle (7-0, 4-0) at No. 6 Blanchard (6-1, 3-1)

A win for Tuttle almost locks up the district title, while a win by Blanchard could send the playoff scenario into chaos with a possible three-way tie including Bethany to end the season.

5. Class 5A No. 10 Duncan (7-0, 4-0) at No. 2 Ardmore (7-0, 4-0)

Control of District 5A-1 is up for grabs between two teams that have both scored an average of 38 points and allowed an average of seven points.

6. Class 6A-I No. 4 Edmond Santa Fe (6-1, 3-1) at No. 6 Westmoore (5-2, 3-1)

A huge game for playoff positioning, Edmond Santa Fe has been impressive, but quarterback Kanan Hansen’s health is a big concern against a Westmoore team gaining momentum.

7. Class 2A No. 7 Sperry (7-0, 4-0) at No. 8 Victory Christian (6-1, 3-1)

Look for a lot of fireworks between two high-scoring offenses with postseason aspirations.

Sperry is looking to move closer the district title showdown in two weeks with Beggs, while Victory Christian is looking to stay in the hunt.

8. Class 4A No. 9 Bristow (7-0, 4-0) at No. 7 Wagoner (6-1, 3-1)

Oologah’s stunning win over Wagoner last week opened the door for Bristow to steal the district title with a win this week and next against Catoosa.

9. Class 6A-I No. 9 Moore (4-3, 3-1) at No. 7 Putnam North (6-1, 3-1)

Moore and Putnam North begin a huge stretch to close the season that will determine their playoff fates. Putnam North star Will Taylor and Moore star Daniel Hishaw Jr. squaring off is also worth seeing.

10. Class B No. 7 Laverne (6-1, 2-0) at No. 1 Shattuck (6-0, 1-0)

An annual rivalry game in district play is also a rematch of the past two Class B state championship games. Shattuck won the previous matchup and has been dominant to this point.

Note: All games Thursday, unless noted.
