Colbert leads Midwest City to rout over Del City

DEL CITY — Midwest City goes as Preston Colbert does.

On Thursday night against rival Del City, Colbert went for six.

The senior quarterback scored six touchdowns, three though the air and three on the ground, as Midwest City trounced Del City 42-6 at Robert Kalsu Stadium.

“That’s crazy,” Colbert said after the Bombers moved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in district. “It feels good. I knew coming back from my injury I’d be back for this game. This whole week I’d been excited that I was going to be back just for this game especially.”

Colbert injured his left leg in the Bombers second game against Carl Albert and had either missed a game or not played at 100 percent in the games that followed.

But on Thursday night, Colbert returned to his normal form as he threw for 261 yards on 9-of-13 passing and three touchdowns, while rushing for 90 yards and three more scores.

Midwest City coach Darrell Hall said he thought Colbert’s play equaled Midwest City playing its best game of the year.

“We go as he goes,” Hall said. “When he’s off we don’t click, and when he goes and he can be a great leader for us, we look the best we probably have all year.”

The intensity factor was turned up this year as both schools are in District 6A-II-1 as Del City moved up from Class 5A this season.

After the two teams shook hands, Midwest City took its black and gold flag and planted it on the eagle logo at midfield. Del City players ran back out onto the field to protest.

Coaches cleared the players away without any major incident.

“It wasn’t just a rivalry game, it’s a district game now, too,” Hall said of the commotion after the game. “It hasn’t been that way and there was way more at stake. I think our team came out and played to the caliber we are capable of playing at.”

Midwest City harassed Del City’s sophomore quarterback Jahkobie Smith all night, forcing him into bad throws and sacking him six times.

Del City (6-2, 4-1) came in averaging more than 430 yards per game, but only managed 140 yards on Thursday night and 32 yards on the ground.

Wesley Dedmon led the way in receiving for Del City with two catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. Senior running back Oshei Whiteside had two catches for 80 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 49 yards.

Midwest City senior running back Cameron Wilson added 74 yards on the ground while sophomore Kristawn Friday had 55 yards rushing.

For Colbert, he says it meant a lot to have his best game against a rival.

“Each year has been an exciting year,” Colbert said. “In-city rivalry, it’s always means more, so I was glad I got to be at my best for this one.”
